Phase IV: Barents Sea Integrated chemostratigraphic, biostratigraphic and sedimentological dataset of the Ingøydjupet Group

The Phase I, II and III studies, together with the ongoing annual datapacks provide a comprehensive stratigraphic database and reservoir quality evaluation of the Jurassic & Triassic, and Cretaceous & Tertiary intervals in the southern Norwegian Barents Sea.

Gas discoveries in the mid-late Triassic over the Loppa High and Bjarmeland Platform, have enhanced interest in the Triassic plays in the area. Traditional methods of biostratigraphic age dating in this interval have proven largely unsuitable in generating a high resolution stratigraphic breakdown, consequently an additional technique has been applied.

Chemostratigraphy is a technique based on systematic variations in inorganic geochemistry in sediments. In combination with sedimentological and biostratigraphical datasets, it provides a powerful tool to aid the characterisation and correlation of sand body connectivity, appreciation of sediment sourcing and identification of stratigraphic packaging.

  • Quantitative inorganic geochemical breakdown (c.43 elements) on 846 core and cutting samples over 20 wells.
  • Standardised high-resolution chemostratigraphic zonation throughout the entire interval.
  • Integration of chemozones into the broader regional sedimentological and biostratigraphical dataset (subject to licence of Phase I).
  • A series of time-slice maps identifying distribution and extent of different chemozones, with comments on changes in source/provenance and directions of sediment transport throughout the Triassic.
  • Fully updated palaeogeographical time-slice maps for the Triassic (subject to licence of Phase I).
